China has vowed to retaliate against Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, calling them “typical bullying,” while the EU and other allies express shock and prepare responses. Trump’s new tariffs, framed as a “Liberation Day” move, have triggered market drops in Asia and Europe and global concern over an escalating trade war.
The U.S. hit China with tariffs up to 54%, while also targeting allies like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia. Even close partners like the UK and Australia weren’t spared, though they received smaller hikes.
Global leaders condemned the abrupt move. Germany warned of a looming recession, Italy and the UK called for calm, and China accused Trump of isolating the U.S. Meanwhile, Beijing is expected to counter with tariffs on U.S. goods and stricter export controls. Trump also closed the duty-free loophole for small packages, affecting platforms like Shein and Temu.
As allies feel the heat, China is quietly drawing them closer, capitalizing on the chaos. Analysts warn of deeper rifts in global trade and alliances, with supply chain shifts and geopolitical realignments already underway.
